Tails in evaporation still?

Postby lucky_jkl » Tue Nov 03, 2009 5:35 pm

I was wondering if one were to slow evaporate their mash would the distilate contain no tails or fusels oils in it if temperature was kept real low? That is what some sites claim that because of low temperature product comes out better ( does this have any merit??). If tails not present in stripped wash I imagine the foreshots and heads would be present? Would these be able to be removed with a simple pot still for a nice product and if so would the final distillation in pot be improved with baking soda and salt (how much to add?) before distilling to get a nice neutral alcohol...

Sounds like you are wanting to build/use an Amazing Still. Foreshots and heads would definately be in there. No way to get them out, unless you stop and remove them, then start the thing back up.
It would take days to 'strip' a 5 gallon batch. A simple potstill can do it in a couple of hours.

What about the tails and fusels? To remove the foreshots and heads taking the first 100ml do it or does that only work when using pot still with high abv and with 15% mash that not possible so early?

If you let it run long enough, the tails and fusil oils will come across.
An evaporative still works just like any other still. It just takes way too long to do it.
