My first thumper run

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.

My first thumper run

Postby Daantje » Mon Nov 02, 2009 8:02 am

I just finished running my first thumper run (excluding cleaning runs) on http://www.homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=12252. I did a 18 L [5 gal] DWWG wash, put enough in the thumper to cover the inlet tube and the rest of it in my 50 L keg boiler. I collected in 16 200ml jars and will let them air for a while and try to make the right cuts. I didn't go deep in the tails, they were just starting to get cloudy, but I ran out of collection jars.

Any tips for what specific smells and flavours too look for when making DWWG cuts?

Dont know much about the DWWG, but for me, heads taste bitter and give me a headache. like, just the smell is enough!!!
Tails taste kinda OK but soapy, wet sock\ wet dog smell..
I find the easiest way is to cut it down to below 40% as you run, and take a drink. If it tastes good and you want to swallow it, you are close, or in the hearts. If you want to spit it out, then you are in the heads or tails.. just my 2c.. :D

I made my cuts today. I tried to decide the cuts off the still and let my girlfriend do a smell test today to see if she thinks te same (I did not tell her anything on forehand). She said:

jar 1: aceton
jar 2: aceton / cleaning spirit
jar 3: cleaning spirit
jar 4: sweet and creamy
jar 5: plesent, sweet and creamy
jars 6 and 7: sweet and creamy
jar 8: lots of smell, sweet and creamy
jar 9: creamy and whisky like
jars 10-13: sharper compared to 6-9
jar 14: little nasty, rotting grass
jars 15 and 16 : very nasty rotting grass

Off the still I also decided to make a cute at jar 4 and was doubting to cut at 14 of 15. So in the end we thought the same. I guess I keep jars 4-13 which is about 1.5 L at 70% out of a 18 L DWWG wash (about the yield I was expecting)

I wasn't expecting it to smell creamy however. Can DWWG smell "creamy" or is something off?

Daantje, I'd equate "creamy" == "smooth"... That makes creamy a good thing... However, if "creamy" == "cows milk", that might be a different story...

She thinks creamy I think as in full and round (as in not sharp), so might in the end be a good thing
I think it is hard enough to name a smell or taste, let alone translate in into another language..

I tasted the combination of the cuts and it is kind of sweet, no real light wheat taste of the wheat germs, but might come of a little after it has a while (maybe on oak).

What if everything after the heads smells sweet, and you stop collecting at 45% to 50% and they smell sweet.... I have not had any bad smelling stuff, and I have done a lot of cleaning runs so there is no bad stuff left????
