Meet my new grain crusher

Aside from stills, much equipment is involved in the process of distillation.

Meet my new grain crusher

I usually add some rolled grains to my sugar washes for a bit of extra flavour.
One day I decided to try some whole grains, but I needed them in smaller pieces.

I tried a hammer, a clever, an anvil and finally used the bosses Bamix. Well, three handfulls later, a busted Bamix and a slapp across the ears, I decided I needed a better way to do this.

So I toddled off to the shed and saw GODZILLA. Anything you give to Godzilla, it shreds. Literally. It taught my toy poodle how to walk on her front legs. No.... just kidding.

Now that you've stopped laughing!

I had to clean all the shrubbery out of it. That's why the Little Beaver air compressor is there. Don't want to be fermenting grevilleas and bangalow palms.

After cleaning it out good, I put a bag on it's snout and tipped in 2 Kg of wheat and Barley.
I found it did a better job if you tipped it in quick, rather than trickle it in slow.

After 3 passes, which took about 9 seconds all up :D it looked OK.

Put Godzilla back in the wood shed and went inside.
The end result was 2 Kg of cracked wheat and barley. I'd say all but a handful got busted up.

I was so happy I went and chucked it into a batch of sour mash with some cracked corn.
I will find out how it tastes in about 2 weeks.

That's all I have.

A good example of lateral thinking.

As long as there is no contamination, of course.

I bought it from Bunnings a few years ago. Cost about $200.

It's a Talon AS200200. 2200W/2800rpm with 2 reversible blades.

There are probably smaller cheaper units available. Garage sales are a good place to start.
